5 /05/04 - Last
night Kyle was inducted into the Eustis High School National Honors Society.
We were very happy that he could not only catch up with his class after
missing five months of school, but to also keep his 3.75 grade point average.
Next on the agenda is a long awaited cruise to the eastern Carribean. The
entire family is taking a week long break from May 29 until June 5. Upon
our return, Kyle travels back to the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia on June
15. He will be having both arms operated on June 17. The
surgery is called tendon transfer surgery and will hopefully give Kyle more
grasp and finger control. the bad part is he can not use his arms for 3 months
until everything has healed. We hope your prayers will continue
for a successful surgery.
Until then, love you all...
The Lens 4/23/04 - Kyle finally got his drivers license. He is
enjoying his new freedom to drive without mom and dad being back seat drivers.
He is driving a Pontiac Montana van that has been custom built for him and his
wheelchair.
3/28/04 -
Latest news about Kyle comes from Shriner's Hospital in Tampa. We were invited
to come to their Tampa facility for his 6 mos. evaluation. Shriner's
Philadelphia flew down Dr.Betz and staff for the one day spinal cord injury
clinic. Physical therapy, Occupational therapy, nursing issues and extensive
x-rays of his neck, back and pelvis were all evaluated....good news he is
looking great and gaining strength and is a ideal candidate for tendon
transfer surgery. They would also like to have him re-evaluated for physical
therapy and an aquatic workout will be designed for home. Spinal Cord Injury
Program of Fla. is going to help finance a pool lift for use as part of Kyle"s
home exercise routine. We are looking at about 5 weeks in Philly this
summer for surgery on both hands and water therapy training. Kyle is very
positive about having the surgery even though he doesn't like the ideal of
spending another summer in a hospital. Having this surgery will really change
his ability to do more for himself by leaps and bounds. Give thanks to God for
his blessing of recovery and keep us in your prayers.

3/10/04 - News for Lake
Seneca Road....beware Kyle is now driving! I can easily count the new
gray hairs on my head but all in all he is a pretty good driver. Bruce
and I have attempted to use the hand controls to drive and they are
tricky. Kyle makes it look easy. Does this sound familar to any of
you....I am yelling you are too close to the shoulder of the road and he
yelling to me...Stop yelling at me. Boy it is a scary thing to not be in
control of the vehicle. He is going back one more time at our request to
have the OT driving
instructor review him before he takes his driver's exam. If you haven't
heard we sold Kyle's beautiful black truck...but if you know Kyle he is
already planning his next custom ride.
1/23/04 - New photos
fresh from rehab Thursday...notice that Kyle is NOT wearing any leg braces
to support him when he stands. Pretty awesome! He is planning on
taking one more class at school and for our high school that translates
into half the day, He is very tired at the end of the day but it is a good
tired. His teacher will still be teaching him at home for his algebra and
biology classes. I stay very busy keeping up with Dr.'s,
therapy and whatever else pops up. Oh by the way, Kyle will be having
another driving evaluation soon, this time on I-4 in mod to heavy traffic.
I will be waiting at the driving office in deep prayer. Our love to
everyone.... Marie
1/15/04 - Kyle attends his
driving course evaluation in Orlando. After preliminary paperwork is
finished, Kyle chooses a Buick Regal with hand controls as his choice of
vehicle to test drive. After a successful transfer from the wheelchair
to the car, the instuctor says, "Let's go". Two hours later, Kyle returns
after cruising downtown Orlando. Needless to say, he was elated and
can hardly wait until the next session.
